Portugal on stamps

This issue depicts tiles found on the islands of Santa Maria (150$00 stamp) and São Miguel (all other values), in the Azores. All tiles are from the 17th century, except for the 18th century tile on the 100$00 stamp.

The set was designed by Ana Bela Silva and circulated from 28 March 1994 to 31 March 1999. The Mint, in Lisbon, lithographed 1 million stamps of 40$00 and 500 thousand stamps of each other value, on enamelled paper sheets of 5×10 stamps, with perforation 12×12½. The Mint also produced 50 thousand booklets, each with a se-tenant set of stamps without horizontal perforation.
