Portugal on stamps

This issue commemorates the founding of Condado Portucalense (the second County of Portugal, which included part of current Portugal north of Coimbra) by King Afonso VI of Leon and Castille in ca. 1095-6. The first count was Henry of Burgundy, who was the nephew of the King’s wife and had helped the King in retaking lands from the Moors. In 1093, Henry had married the King’s illegitimate daughter, Theresa of Leon. Their only son to survive childhood, Afonso Henriques, would become the second count and Portugal’s first king in 1139.

The stamp was designed by Luiz Duran, lithographed by the Mint on enamelled paper sheets with 5×10 stamps of perforation 12×12½, and circulated from 9 October 1996 to 30 September 2001.
