Portugal on stamps

This issue commemorates the 1796 decree that created the Royal Public Library of the Court. The library was first installed in Terreiro do Paço. In 1836 it moved to Convento de S. Francisco and renamed National Library of Lisbon. In 1969 it moved to its current, purpose made building, in Campo Grande. Among its various functions, the National Library of Portugal acts as legal deposit of Portuguese works.

The stamp was designed by João Tinoco, lithographed by the Mint on enamelled paper sheets of 5×10 stamps with perforation 12×12½, and circulated from 29 February 1996 to 30 September 2001.
