This issue commemorates the conclusion of the Frederico de Freitas Museum project in 1999. The museum is housed in the former residence of lawyer Frederico de Freitas, in Funchal, Madeira, hosting his impressive collections of tiles, paintings, furniture, ceramics and sculpture, which he bequeathed to the Madeira government.

The stamps were designed by José Brandão and were issued on 1 July 1999. The Mint, in Lisbon, lithographed on enamelled paper 60 thousand miniature sheets with the set and, on sheets of 5×10 stamps, 1 million stamps of 51$00, 500 thousand stamps of 95$00, 500 thousand stamps of 80$00, and 250 thousand stamps of each other value. The stamps have perforation 12×12½.
