Portugal on stamps

This is the first of two Brazilian issues commemorating the European discovery of America by Columbus in 1492. The stamps in this issue feature Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who commanded the first European expedition to cross the Pacific Ocean, entering it in 1520 via the now called Strait of Magellan, and Francisco de Orellana, the Spanish explorer who commanded the first navigation of the Amazon river in 1542.

The stamps were designed by Luiz Duran, lithographed on coated paper with perforation 11½×12 and a phosphor band, and issued on 12 October 1991.
