This series commemorates the Carnation Revolution that ended the dictatorial regime on 25 April 1974. The stamps are based on the colours of the national flag: green, red, yellow, blue and white. The second stamp depicts the Parliament as symbol of the democracy introduced by the revolution.
The stamps were designed by Luiz Duran (51$00) and João Machado (80$00), lithographed by the Mint on enamelled paper sheets with 5×10 stamps of 51$00 or with 5×5 stamps of 80$00, and issued on 25 April 1999. The stamps have perforation 12×12½.
