This stamp commemorates the birth of writer and politician João Baptista de Almeida Garrett (1799-1854), the introducer of the Romantic literary style in Portugal.
The stamp was designed by José Luís Tinoco, lithographed by the Mint on enamelled paper sheets of 5×10 stamps with 12×12½ perforation, and issued on 24 March 1999. A stamp of the same design, but with a value of 210$00 / 1.05€, is part of a miniature sheet, of which 60 thousand were printed.
