musings on games, plugged and unplugged

11 September 2008 was a disappointing night: I didn’t really enjoy any of the games I tried. But then, one can’t know without trying.

Ben kindly gave me a lift and we arrived at 7.30. He went straight to his Starcraft game with Paul D., Damen and Michael. André, Nigel, Keith and Matt had already played 4 rounds of Ricochet Robots, and I joined in, although it was immediately clear that Read more… »

Hamburgum session

On 17 July 2008, I decided to go to the games night only in the last minute, and Paul B. was very nice in letting me have his place in Hamburgum. Eventually it wasn’t needed because someone didn’t come. Anyhow, Paul preferred to play Memoir’44 with Nick, while Matt, Steve, Keith and I played Hamburgum. Read more… »

Agricola session

On 3 July 2008, Matt brought Agricola and played with Ben, Peter C. and myself. Mare Nostrum and Power Grid were played at the other tables. The game ended with Peter C. winning with 33 points, Ben had 30, I had 27 and Matt 21. Peter was the only one without empty fields, and 5 family members, while Ben got a 4th in the last round and hence didn’t put it to use. I also had 4 family members, but no encircled stables, and one field remained empty.

A tough and intense game, but I can’t understand the fuss everyone’s making about it. I guess I need to play it a couple more times.

El Capitán and Manhattan session

On 1 May 2008, Nick B. brought Cuba and played it with David, Peter, Matt and someone else I forgot, while André, Manuela, Nigel and Nick played RoboRally. Steve, Keith, Damen and I played El Capitán, which I had ordered from Nigel. I bought the game because Read more… »

Stone Age session

Almost full house tonight – 16 players! Nick, André and Ben played Elasund; Keith, David, Paul B. and (who else?) played Seafarers of Catan followed by Cartagena; Nigel, Ian, Sam, Simon and Huggy finished their Game of Thrones that started last week; and Ester, Julian, Matt and I played Stone Age.

I was curious about this game in the Geek’s top 50 Read more… »

Santiago and Puerto Rico session

For the 20 March 2008 session, Matt had sent an e-mail saying he was bringing Santiago or San Marco. It must have been telepathy Read more… »

Carcassonne session

Today, after her piano practice, my 8 year old daughter wanted to play a game with me and the best 2-player non-abstract game we have is Carcassonne, so I suggested it. (“Carcassonne is not abstract…?”, I hear you wondering. Read more… »

Acquire and Thurn&Taxis session

On 2 February 2008, David brought along Samurai & Katana and played it with Nick, Peter and some others. It took most of the evening. At 10pm they started a Cartagena game. Nigel, Manuela, André and others played one game of Power Grid. I brought my recently acquired 30 year old copy of Acquire and Read more… »

Puerto Rico and For Sale session

Tonight, David and Keith played two games of Commands and Colours: Ancients over the whole evening, while Nigel, Ian, Sam, and Peter H. started a Game of Thrones, and Ester, Julian, Matt, “Bald Nick” and I played Puerto Rico. Ester and Julian were new to the game, whereas it was the 4th time for me (the first was in January 2007). As for Matt and Nick, they must have countless Puerto Rico games under their belt… Read more… »
