musings on games, plugged and unplugged

Archives for sessions category

After 3 weeks of absence, I returned to the game sessions. It was a nice to see two new faces. Moreover, I finally got a chance to play Kontor, a team game, something we don’t play at these sessions: it’s mostly individual competitive games, with the occasional cooperative game thrown in, like Shadows over Camelot.

But first, André, Manuela and I started with a game of No Thanks! while we waited for more players to arrive.  It’s the most minimalist game I know: in every turn you have exactly the same binary choice, Read more… »

On 6 November 2008, Nick, Matt, Manuela, Ben and I played In the Year of the Dragon, a favourite of ours, I dare say, after the excellent previous experience. Read more… »

Shadows over Camelot session

9 October 2008 was bring & buy (or trade) night and many games were on display, but I don’t think there were many transactions that weren’t agreed in advance. In the end, most games remained with their old owners… Read more… »

Fire & Axe session

On 2 October 2008, Sam brought his copy of this game and played with Manuela, Keith and myself. Nobody had played the game before, but Sam had read the rules. It took us the whole evening, with Manuela winning by a large margin due to her settlements in the French coast and the most invasions. I made a calculation error in the final rounds and couldn’t make neither the invasion of Constantinople nor the settlement of another city in the south.

A far too long game for the mild excitement it gives.

The Year of the Dragon session

25 September 2008 was another great night, which first seemed to be a bummer: with a Formula Dé championship game going, and the other two games (Domaine and The Year of the Dragon) fully booked, it looked like I would have no place to play and have to return home. Fortunately, Read more… »

Notre Dame and Intrigue session

After the previous week’s disappointment, 18 September 2008 was a great games night! I only played two games, but in both cases there was a surprise at the end. Read more… »

11 September 2008 was a disappointing night: I didn’t really enjoy any of the games I tried. But then, one can’t know without trying.

Ben kindly gave me a lift and we arrived at 7.30. He went straight to his Starcraft game with Paul D., Damen and Michael. André, Nigel, Keith and Matt had already played 4 rounds of Ricochet Robots, and I joined in, although it was immediately clear that Read more… »

Hamburgum session

On 17 July 2008, I decided to go to the games night only in the last minute, and Paul B. was very nice in letting me have his place in Hamburgum. Eventually it wasn’t needed because someone didn’t come. Anyhow, Paul preferred to play Memoir’44 with Nick, while Matt, Steve, Keith and I played Hamburgum. Read more… »

Yspahan and Meuterer session

On 10 July 2008, the first Formula Dé tournament started, with 7 players racing at Monza. Read more… »

Agricola session

On 3 July 2008, Matt brought Agricola and played with Ben, Peter C. and myself. Mare Nostrum and Power Grid were played at the other tables. The game ended with Peter C. winning with 33 points, Ben had 30, I had 27 and Matt 21. Peter was the only one without empty fields, and 5 family members, while Ben got a 4th in the last round and hence didn’t put it to use. I also had 4 family members, but no encircled stables, and one field remained empty.

A tough and intense game, but I can’t understand the fuss everyone’s making about it. I guess I need to play it a couple more times.
